4 Things to Consider When Searching for “CrossFit Gyms Near Me”

CrossFit is not a new thing. In fact, it’s been around now since 2000. Chances are, you’ve seen it on Facebook or Instagram, or even have a family member, a friend or a co-worker that does it.

If your interest is peaked, take our advice, and consider these 4 things before you do a google search.

1. Consider more than just price and location in your decision.

This is usually one of the first factors when thinking about joining a gym. In my opinion, an awesome CrossFit gym with incredible members and community is worth having to drive a little farther.

CrossFit is more than just an open gym concept where people get in and get out. People come here for a social aspect too. Each and every gym has a unique and different culture, and you should find one where you connect with the members and coaches. A good piece of advice is to try a couple out and see where you fit in.

CrossFit can be expensive…but it can also be really cheap.
CrossFit can be expensive, but it can also be cheap

You absolutely get what you pay for. You need to decide what it is you want. Are you looking for access to equipment but not much coaching and care? If so, we would probably recommend the lower priced option. But if you’re new to the CrossFit world, we wouldn’t want to steer you in that direction. CrossFit has a lot of complex movements that can be dangerous and you’ll definitely need quality coaching.

At Vernal Fitness & Nutrition, we pride ourself on service. We create a solid foundation of movement knowledge with our one-on-one training services, which come at a higher cost point. If you’re looking for this type of a higher value service that gets you results quicker than just attending group classes, you should give thought to a CrossFit gym that provides Personal Training.

2. Make Sure the CrossFit boxes near you understand your goals.

Some of the best CrossFit gyms understand that to best help their clients, they need to know what their wants and needs are.

The best gyms know that we are in business to get people results. The worst are in it to get as many people in the doors as possible.

We start your journey a “No Sweat Intro”. This is where we sit down with you and ask what your goals are. Are you wanting to lose weight? Get stronger? Tone up? Feel better?

What are your goals, and why?
Here’s a little secret **those great gyms out there will ask you, “WHY?”**

Understanding someone’s “why” is a very powerful tool. All goals have a deep root. Are you wanting to lose weight because there is family history of weight related disease? Do you want to get stronger so that you can lift your kids or grandkids? Do you just want it to be easier to get out of bed and move around?

If no one has ever sat down with you and asked you not only your goals, but why you have these goals, they won’t truly understand you.

3. Find out if the CrossFit gyms near you offer nutrition coaching

“But I’m not looking to change my diet, I just want to exercise!”

CrossFit isn’t only about lifting heavy weights and doing crazy gymnastic movements. It’s about improving your health and wellness.

The founder of CrossFit, Greg Glassman defines fitness in 100 words, “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice major lifts: deadlift, clean, squat, presses, clean-and-jerk and snatch.

“Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics; Pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstands, pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc. hard and fast. Five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Nutrition is the foundation
Notice that the first 26 words are all about nutrition?

This is because nutrition is the foundation of any great fitness or health routine. On average, those who seek nutrition coaching see 3.5 times better results than those who only exercised. If you’re loading your diet with processed, high sugar foods, you’re not doing CrossFit. You NEED healthy, nutritious, real, whole foods.

If you want results fast, you need to find a gym that has both nutrition and personal training. “You can’t out train a bad diet”.

4. Are you looking for a “CrossFit gym near me” or a “CrossFit personal trainer near me”?

Starting a new fitness routine is overwhelming and intimidating. You can find yourself not knowing what you’re doing, not knowing the terminology, and lost in all of the equipment. We would highly suggest that you find somewhere to work one-on-one with a personal trainer.

The best place to start is a CrossFit gym that offers personal training. After experiencing it, you might even find that you like it better than group classes!

Getting fit is a goal. CrossFit is way to get fit. Group training and personal training are both great ways to get there, one yielding faster results than the other.

At Vernal Fitness & Nutrition, we offer both. We have found personal training beneficial for the following clients:

  • Those with pre-existing injuries
  • Those new to CrossFit
  • Older clients who might be neglected if put group class with younger members
  • Those who want to make sure they are doing movements correctly
  • Those who don’t like a group setting.

What we’re trying to say is that it’s probably not the most beneficial for you to throw in “CrossFit gym near me” in the search bar or google maps. Your health and the success of your fitness journey is worth the time it takes to do a little research.
